Valencia erhielt den Titel aufgrund seiner bisherigen und aktuellen Erfolge im Bereich nachhaltiger Tourismus, Klimaneutralität sowie eines fairen und integrativen grünen Wandels. 97 % der Stadtbewohner leben im Umkreis von 300 Metern um städtische Grünflächen. Die Stadt hat auch ihr Engagement für die Verbesserung der Luftqualität und die Wiederherstellung von Naturökosystemen wie den Dünen- und Feuchtgebietsökosystemen von Devesa unter Beweis gestellt.
